WHAT IS A BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER? A British Sign Language Interpreter is a professional person who interprets from English to BSL and BSL to English. This is usually done simultaneously and enables communication to take place between a Deaf sign language user and a hearing person. WHY USE A REGISTERED SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER? Sign Language Interpreters who are Registered Members of professional bodies such as the Scottish Association of Sign Language Interpreters (SASLI) and Association of Sign Language Interpreters (ASLI) are bound by a strict Code of Conduct and Practice. WHAT IS A LIPSPEAKER? Lipspeakers are hearing people trained to repeat accurately a speaker’s message without using their voice. They use facial expression, as well as producing the rhythm, phrasing and flow of the speaker. Lipspeakers will use fingerspelling, gesture and /or sign if requested.
